aesthetically speaking: new wave british decor

there are some styles that are so classic and cool, they never go out of fashion, and for me, british inspired design is one of those things!

british living room blog

when you imagine the traditional english home a few things come to mind; beautiful case goods in rich stains with a bit of patina, a great paisley or floral printed sofa, well worn leather sofa (or faux!) and of course stripes. however, the modern british movement is taking these tried and true elements and reinterpreting them into contemporary scenes. taking the familiar, adding a twist of whimsy with light, airy elements to keep the traditional alive, while bringing in a young, fresh feel. we’ve taken the liberty to pull together a room fit for princess kate herself, with nods to the time-honored, with some quirky touches.

aesthetically speaking: african bogolan mud cloth

we love seeing how people incorporate traditional cultural items into contemporary settings! for some, it’s a way of honoring their heritage and for others it’s simply a way of adding character and style to their personal space. one of those items in particular is the african bogolan mud cloth. we love its simplicity and the hand painted geometric lines which give it a graphic, modern feel while still maintaining its rustic nature. lately, we’ve been seeing this motif in both design and fashion, so we wanted to share some of our favorites!

art house: lacma’s latin american art galleries

one of the benefits of living in los angeles is our access to some of the finest art museums in the world. lacma is truly one of our favorite museums to explore! and because we live so close, we do so at our leisure to look for design inspiration.

we recently stopped in to take a closer look of some of the treasures housed in the art of the americas building. and, it did not disappoint! in recent years, lacma has been paying particular attention to developing more of their latin american art galleries, especially spanish colonial, modern, and contemporary holdings. so, if you have not been there in recent years, get ready for quite the transformation.

we were particularly drawn to the various forms of decorative storage. simply exquisite! you have to see for yourself in person, but we do want to point out a few key pieces that you should take note of when you are there. the scale of some of these are beyond amazing! we immediately thought how perfect these would be in a kpi project since we love to remix the new with the old, and infuse rooms with character and charm.

this peruvian chest is made of exotic woods and ornamented with very lavish materials, including mother of pearl, tortoiseshell and ivory. a wonderful representation of the more refined decorative arts!

apparently, sewing boxes were very highly valued during spanish colonial times. we can see why! you can tell the extra care that went into them to make them very special.

museum tip: on the second tuesday of every month, general admission to lacma is free to all. la residents also have the option of getting in free every tuesday, thursday and friday after 3pm. so, plan a date for after work or take yourself to experience the beauty of latin american art!

hot off the press: better homes and gardens

most of us probably know by now that paint can be one of the most difficult decisions to make when decorating a room. even selecting the correct neutral shade can seem like a task. well, thank you to better homes and gardens for their feature on creamy paint colors this month where they asked kishani to share her secrets! we were honored to have the opportunity to ease your decision making and simplify your sampling process. when it comes to selecting the perfect shade of white, kishani’s go-to has always been benjamin moore’s decorators white. it has yet to fail us, and we don’t foresee that ever happening! see the article below for more expert tips and again, a big thank you to better homes and gardens for letting us share a helpful tip!

hot off the press: elle decor

have you picked up your june issue of elle decor yet? our very own kishani was featured in the always informative ‘truth in decorating’ series this month! we finally get to reveal the details of her super secret trip to new york and share the full feature. we have been so excited about this for months and are so honored that they called on kishani to share her design knowledge alongside richard keith langham. we should also note that we love the new layout and approach they took this month. it makes us feel a part of the designers’ conversation, and gave us such a quick style lesson on each piece. we wish we could say kishani picked a favorite bench, but really, each bench fits a different need for a different client. thank you again to elle decor for letting kishani share her design advice with all of you! we couldn’t be more excited!

our week

this week has been exciting at the kpi offices! we are finally bringing on board another design assistant to keep up with so many new projects. we might just grow right out of this office! time for kp to get serious about the backyard pool office she kind of promised us. we’re the creative kind, we’re more productive in natural surroundings, right? well until then, we’re enjoying our brick and mortar set up and being surrounded by the awesome vintage home goods in rummage. which by the way, hosts regular flash sales for you to snag up some of our fave pieces for a crazy good price! follow them on instagram and twitter to keep up!

speaking of keeping up, we didn’t even tell you we just completed two projects! one is los feliz and another in west hollywood. two very different projects, but both turned out so incredible, we cannot wait to share. photoshoots happening soon! on a sad note for the week, our little gus man had to undergo the inevitable manhood surgery this week. don’t worry, he is spoiled enough so we know kp is taking extra special care of little man! in the meantime, we’ve been busy collecting some of our fave links for the week to share with you! as always, be sure to follow us on twitter and like us on facebook for great links and updates throughout the week!
