in the words of walt whitman, “i think i could turn and live with animals, they are so placid and self-contained, i stand and look at them long and long.” this poignant quote opens sharon montrose’s most recent book, menagerie. melding her passion for photography with her love of animals, award winning artist, and friend, sharon montrose’s definitive photographic style has made her one of the most sought-after commercial photographers specializing in animals for over a decade. here at kp we love to shop her amazing online store, the animal print shop. prints from the animal print shop, specifically her series’ babies and little darlings can be seen adorning some of the most perfect nurseries and children’s bedrooms. being long time friends, we love seeing sharon’s new work, and even have a little top secret project we are currently working on together! stay tuned for more animal prints and of course darling nurseries.
we are pretty big fans of fall here at kpi! mostly because that means we have three holidays to use as perfect excuses for redecorating! there is just something about the colors of fall that inspire that homey, cozy feeling! we love the beautiful reds and oranges, that go so well with our favorite shades of black and brown! so when halloween comes around, we are ready to get going with our pumpkin decorating! although we will admit, we aren’t much for the mess of carving these days! we prefer glam pumpkins that we can keep a little longer than a hollowed out jack-o-lantern. so this past week we spent a little too much time researching our next pumpkin project, and just had to share with you our favorite finds! this is the edited list! thanks to pinterest and all of the amazing bloggers out there, we could keep this list going for days!
with fall officially here, the cooler days are perfect for outdoor adventures! we actually rather camp in the cooler days than try to beat the heat all summer! well, lets be honest, we are more of the glamping type! we highly prefer a vintage airstream trailer to a pitched tent on the hard ground. we swear we aren’t high maintenance, but we just appreciate running water, electricity, a door to close, and you know, maybe a stove for our teapot. okay okay, so we are a little high maintenance, but the world is catering to it now and who are we to deny ourselves the adventure of camping in a glamorous way? from santa barbara, to oregon, then british columbia, and over to montana! you can find a glamping retreat almost anywhere these days! we’ve lined up our top four glamping destinations to share with you, so prepare for wanderlust overdrive! just be realistic and be sure to pack the appropriate shoes!
first on our list is the most convenient, el capitan canyon in santa barbara, ca. here you can rough it in a safari tent, find a happy medium in a yurt, or go with our choice, a cedar cabin with a fireplace and soaking tub! wherever you choose to sleep, you’ll still have the same opportunity to hike, kayak, swim in the heated swimming pool, or pamper yourself with a massage!

second on the list, just keep heading up the coast, and find yourself a limited spot at green springs inn & cabins, just east of ashland, oregon! while there won’t be any spa services here, we think the in-cabin hot tubs and full kitchens make this more of a lazy weekend getaway! which means you can even ‘camp’ here in the snowy months and enjoy a nature filled visit, complete with a sleigh ride at the right time of year!

for our third glamping spot, just head even further up the coast of course! way north (and across the border) to rockwater secret cove resort in british columbia. we’ll admit, this is more glamour than camping, but they still have cabins and tenthouses. which are a bit of a hike to arrive at, so it qualifies! they have a range of activities including yoga, hiking, fishing, and even nearby museums for a rainy day. then of course they have your relaxation essentials at the spa, followed by a fine dining experience to ensure you get the vacation you need!

our fourth and final favorite will take you east, into greenough, montana to the resort at paws up. here you can stay in a luxury cabin with all of the convenience of a home amidst nature, complete with a private pitched tent for an adventure for the kids, or ‘rough it’ in a luxury tent! with an endless array of activities, multiple restaurants, and of course, a spa, this just might be the best glamping spot we have discovered yet!

it has been the year of brass it seems, and we have loved every minute of it! but just as the seasons are changing, so are the trends! we are seeing more and more copper accents and are excited about this subtle, but interesting change. while brass lends its compliments to jewel tones and black, copper seems to fit better with lighter neutrals and white. it has a softness to it, while still being a wonderful bold and shiny accent! from pendants, to vases, you can even find a copper chair if you’re feeling brave enough! we are welcoming this trend with open arms and are excited to share with you some of the inspiring images we are seeing everywhere! plus we’re sharing some of our favorite copper finds to help you incorporate this trend into your own home!

being a huge fan of fibers design and innovative wood work, we were in awe when we spotted the experimental work of elisa strozyk. born in berlin, strozyk received her master’s degree in future textile design from londons central saint martins college in 2009. although she is a young artist, her work is redefining the way we use and relate to everyday materials. wooden textiles, her most indepth series of work, challenges us to break through the self-imposed limitations we currently have on decor accents. wooden textiles was created for an entirely new tactile experience, and to literally reconnect us with an extremely familiar material in a way we have never known. beyond reconnecting us, it is reminding us to use natural materials that grow abundantly, over man made products that create much more waste and may harm the environment. her incredible half wood, half textile creations are something we have surely never seen before! to see more of her work visit her website.

for better or for worse, 2012 was the year of the chevron stripe. we had chevron headboards, chevron coffee mugs, and an excessive amount of chevron stripe throws. while looking for an updated throw for this fall, we saw the classic herringbone, and the traditional ultra soft throw with fringe, but we are prepping for fall with moroccan inspired textiles! the typical kilim textile is based on a specific type of weaving, and can be very intricate and full of color. today we are opting for a more modern kilim style print, merging eastern technique and western simplicity. whether you are looking for eco-friendly, inexpensive, or simply luxurious, you’ll find your match with one of our picks for the season.

while we wouldn’t consider all spray paint on buildings to be street art, we are fans of real street art, which can be seen everywhere in la! from shepard fairey, kenny scharf, and retna on the west hollywood library, to hidden gems courtesy of banksy spread throughout the city. a man who has recently appeared in la is the secretive chinese artist, daleast, and we are fans! journeying over from capetown, africa in 2012 to make his rounds across the us, daleast is gaining popularity with his incredible new style of street art. his intricacy and attention to detail is jaw dropping, and the meaning he finds in these pieces is even more intriguing. take the time to read his interview with arrested motion, you will not regret it! and check out some of his beautiful work below! his appearance in la is actually outside of los angeles, on the newhall paint store in newhall (a new hub of santa clarita) if you happen to be in the area!
